    Gary, Paul and Gareth, you need to get back to this. I've taken a hiatus from photography for the last 3 years and now just getting back into it, si i'm revisiting all the channels to see what ive missed over the last 3 years. I've missed so much. I really enjoyed Photo Nerds. I hoped once the zombie apocalypse was over you would all get around the table again.

    The feature I am constantly surprised is missing from digital cameras is the ability to upload *directly* to the Internet. I don't mean transferring photos to your smartphone. I mean using a mobile data connection, built into your camera, to upload directly to the Internet - no phone required. You would, of course, need to have a SIM fitted to your camera. In effect you are combining the guts of a mobile phone with a camera. This isn't a new idea. I believe Samsung made such a device before they stopped making cameras, and there may be others, but I don't think there are any current models of camera that support this. Obviously it would be up to the manufacturers how far they took this. They could go mad and put a full implementation of Android on the camera, and even provide the ability to make phone calls, but that is probably a step too far. However, I imagine one of the reasons why so many people abandon their cameras in favour of their smartphones is that phones make it so much easier to share photos on social media. Photographs are, after all, meant to be seen, so surely it is a good thing to be able to do this easily. I'm not a big fan of smartphone photography (ergonomics, small sensor, no tripod socket, no connection for a strap, fragile, lack of interchangeable lenses), but if the advantages of smart phones could be combined with the advantages of conventional digital cameras you would be on to a winner. Uploading from my digital cameras to Facebook is a frustratingly time consuming process. Fiddle about making a WiFi connection between camera and phone. Select the photo(s) or movie(s) to transfer. Wait for them to be transferred. Fire up Facebook on your phone. Find the photos, and finally transfer them. All this done with two valuable devices balanced precariously on your knees or camera bag. How much easier life would be if you could just select the photo or movie on your camera and just upload to Facebook, perhaps adding a short message typed in using the camera's touchscreen. And don't get me started on Instagram. Why on earth is it so hard (pretty much impossible) to upload photos from a Windows computer to Instagram?

    Have dropped my Sony A7Riii from chest height onto concrete. One of the worst moments of my life. The EVF went black for 5 minutes, and the camera wouldn't autofocus for another 15 minutes, but in the end it survived with everything fully functional. 10/10 would not recommend though.

    What Gareth is talking about exists in mobile phones already - it's called 'pixel binning' moto G8 Plus has a 48mpix sensor but out 12 mpix it combines the 4 pixels together to give better low light results.

    Most DSLRs can link spot metering to the focal point - all my Pentax Cameras do (though you have to change the settings) obviously Gary's Canon does and I am 95% sure that Nikon does too - shame Paul wasn't there to confirm it - hope he is well.

    Interesting conversations. Gary - if your ideal camera is one where you can flick between OVF and EVF, look no further than the Fuji X-Pro series. That’s exactly what they do. Think you guys should, when we’re all unlocked, go out and make a tutorial about the difference between an incident and a reflective light meter. I don’t think you were quite on the same page! 😂

      It's also a common option on astronomical cameras as it increases sensibility as much as it decreases resolution.

  • @G0FUW
    @G0FUW 4 года назад

    Isn't what Gareth is advocating just the same as increasing ISO? using fewer bigger pixels would allow better low light performance but would reduce the resolution. I agree that having some in camera memory would be useful, even if it were just as a back up of the card in use. I don't have live histogram and would like to have it, but not enough to spend another grand on a new body.
